Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a novella presented as the “confession” of a bitter, isolated narrator, often called the Underground Man, who is a retired civil servant in St. Petersburg. The first part of the novella is a monologue, but the narrator’s speech is filled with internal conflict, as he engages in a constant dialogue with himself. The work critiques contemporary Russian philosophy, particularly Nikolay Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done?, and is a rebellion against determinism, challenging the idea that human nature and will are governed by science and mathematics.
Extra parking is available in the Stop and Shop lot behind the library, accessible from Messina Drive.
