Shakespeare Club: “The Merchant of Venice” Tuesday, May 20 – 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Change in Venue: East Haven Public Television, 230 Main Street

Hagaman’s Shakespeare Reading Club will again meet to discuss their latest selection, The Merchant of Venice. To join the discussion, please contact Chris Hemingway, Reference Librarian & group facilitator, at: [email protected].

The Merchant of Venice, written by Shakespeare between 1596 and 1598, centers on Antonio, a merchant who defaults on a loan from the Jewish moneylender Shylock, risking a “pound of flesh” as collateral. Classified as a comedy, the play is known for its dramatic moments, especially Shylock’s demand and two famous speeches: Shylock’s on humanity and Portia’s on mercy. The play raises debates about anti-Semitism, highlighting Shylock’s complex character and his plea for justice amid his harsh demands.

Please note: Due to the library’s temporary closure, this program will be held at East Haven Public Television, 230 Main Street in East Haven.
