Meditations is a personal journal by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius where he reflects on Stoic philosophy to guide himself in living a virtuous life, focusing on self-control, duty, and a rational perspective amidst the challenges of his role and life. He emphasizes living in accordance with reason and nature, accepting what is outside of his control, and focusing on the present moment. The work is a collection of his private thoughts and spiritual exercises, not a formal treatise, and encourages focusing on what is within one’s power—like one’s character and judgments—rather than external events or the opinions of others.
